Grant Woods
Lake County's Best Forest Preserve: Grant Woods
Grant Woods Forest Preserve is a stunning natural haven situated in the rolling landscapes of Lake County. Spanning over 1,000 acres, it offers visitors a diverse and captivating outdoor experience. Open all year around with two trails there is always some fun to get into.
Let's start with the grant woods trail: it's a moderate 5 mile trail that goes through vast woodlands, open prairies, and tranquil wetlands. The varied landscapes provide a picturesque backdrop for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers. This is my favorite trail because of the unique tall trees. I don't know the name but they are kind of like the trees in the spruce garden plot at the Morton Arboretum. This trail is gravel and paved but you can check out the unpaved trails off the beaten path too. There's a much shorter trail called the Grant Woods North Loop. It's about a mile and a half long and takes no more than 45 mins to complete. Beginners should check this one out. It's nearly impossible to get lost, just stay on trail and it will loop you right back around to your car.
During the summer you can find many hikers and birders alike. If you come early enough the sounds of nature will drown out all of your worries. I mean it, the birds were BIRDING, the sounds took me back to the most quiet place I have ever been, which was a random lake in Grand Teton National Park. Our main concern when visiting the parks are the sounds from the streets, highways and planes. This place had none of the noise that the traditional Chicagoland trails have. During the winter months you can find people cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and even snowmobiling. Don't believe me, Check it out for yourself!
